I’ve had countless career development opportunities in my four-and-a-half years at Amici and now I’m really excited to embark on my next new challenge as Tech Sourcing Team Manager.

So, how did it all begin? There’s no wrong path.

From an apprenticeship at IBM, to university, to hospitality management, I began to see the importance in the working environment and culture. The advert for the Buyer role at Amici immediately stood out to me. As soon as I attended the recruitment day, I desperately wanted the job! The enthusiasm of the Amici employees, and in particular our CEO Caroline, was completely infectious. The opportunity for me and the business was clear. Not only that, but the idea of working in biotech and contributing in any small way to the important work that is done in the industry, was also very appealing.

    In the beginning.

I started as an Equipment Buyer. I was tasked with sourcing and negotiating lab equipment. Anything from a £100 pipette to a £500k mass spectrometer. To start with I had no idea what some of the equipment was! In order to do the best job, A Buyer should always understand what they are buying. It’s been a fun learning experience. Not only did I need to present the best value options, I invested a lot of time looking at the capital buying journey to make the process lean and deliver the very best results.

    My career at Amici

    My first promotion.

Once I’d become a dab hand at lab equipment I was asked to lead projects for full new labs, often worth millions of pounds. My consultation and project management skills, as well as my negotiation skills, were really put to the test! The training, coaching and support has been key and like nothing I’d ever experienced before. As the business grew, we hired more people and I was given the opportunity to manage the equipment team as it grew to three of us.

    Following maternity leave.

I was asked to take on the challenge of Senior Consumables Buyer in the Strategic Category Team. Our job is to ensure that the customer has the best possible experience using the Amici e-PO platform. We want scientists to intuitively navigate the Amici purchasing platform, find the items they need, make great buying choices, all while benefiting from fantastic savings. We’re constantly refining our strategies and driving category and customer projects that will make a real difference.

Daily high-value negotiations certainly get the adrenaline going! I get so much pride in making a positive impact on our customers every day. From account management to customer consultations – it’s been a steep learning curve! Getting out to understand the customers and their daily challenges is absolutely key to delivering the very best solutions.

    And the next challenge.

I’ve been asked to head up a different purchasing team as the Technical Sourcing Team Manager. I’m really excited about combining my service delivery with my management skills.

    What’s it like at Amici?

We’re a hardworking and driven bunch and have varied experience from both in and out of the industry. I strive for lifelong learning, as much for my team as for our customers and Amici as a whole. I’ve been challenged and pushed outside my comfort zone as I’ve picked up new skills and developed them. I’ve learned so much about the biotech industry which was practically unknown to me before. Everyone has been so supportive and encouraging.

If I’m completely honest, when I attended my recruitment day I thought that what I was presented with must be too good to be true. Four-and-a-half years in and I can confidently say it was entirely accurate.
